Artist
English Collage Artist Phil Scott’s art work re-examines our relationship with
two-dimensional imagery.&#38;nbsp; Often using
photographic imagery his work carefully removes the context and through
sophisticated juxtaposition conveys a new meaning within the final
work(s).&#38;nbsp; 


In his work we often see concepts and relationships develop
as the work has been created, making organic and often forced relationships
with the world we inhabit.&#38;nbsp; The image has
become prevalent and the reading of imagery has become a primary tool in our understanding
of the contemporary world and how we arrived at our destination. Scott’s
intervention in the concept of the image creates a resonance that re-submits
parts of the image in a poignant translation of the society we currently
inhabit.&#38;nbsp; 


The motto of “Find, Cut &#38;amp; Paste” has become a primitive
motto of the processes Scott follows, but placing an emphasis on the “find” or
sourcing of the images he transforms these unique artefacts into contemporary
works in combination with other such imagery. 
The work is largely an extension of later Dada works, evoking
similarities with the role of power and hidden propaganda in the original
source materials.&#38;nbsp; The works frequently
challenge and find a place within the context of art and art history allowing
the audience to attach their own meanings and narrative from the clever
combination of found imagery. 
Scott was born in the North-East of England and went on to study and live in East London for 20 years between 2000-2020.&#38;nbsp; He and his family currently live in Billund, Denmark where he continues to develop his practice as an artist, illustrator and educator/teacher.&#38;nbsp;
Art &#38;amp; Design Educator 
Scott was an extremely successful art educator in London between 2006–2020, becoming fully versed in the delivery of contemporary art practice and theory to young people aged 11–18. Working alongside institutions including Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery and the Institute of Education (UCL), he became a recognised figure in contemporary art teaching, supporting students who progressed to become leading British artists, designers and architects.


Between 2022–2026, Scott brought this educational expertise into LEGO Design as Creative Community Manager during a period of significant global growth. There, he designed and led onboarding and learning experiences rooted in Learning through Play, supporting over 350 designers in developing creative confidence and shared design culture. Scott continues to advise on art education and creative learning strategy, and is currently completing his first book alongside his MA research exploring the application of Learning through Play in meaningful curatorial experiences.

	Deltiology (2025–Present)

Deltiology (2025 - Present) continues Scott’s ongoing exploration of collage and appropriation, guided by a simple working mantra: Find, Cut &#38;amp; Paste. In this series, however, the process shifts subtly. Drawing from an expanding personal collection of vintage postcards, Scott constructs compositions without making a single incision. Instead, images are placed alongside one another intact, allowing their meanings to shift through proximity rather than alteration.


The source material carries its own layered history. Each postcard references a specific place: landscapes, monuments, tourist views, but also bear the marks of travel and time. Faded colours, worn edges, and printed messages reveal the journeys these small artefacts have undertaken. Scott treats these objects not only as images but as artefacts and fragments of lived experiences, records of movement and memory embedded within the material itself.


Unlike earlier postcard works such as Chances (2010) and Paris Postcarde (2010), where cutting and recomposition were central to the process, Deltiology relies on careful placement and visual dialogue between images. A coastline may align with a distant mountain range, or a street scene may open unexpectedly into another geography. Through these quiet collisions, familiar landscapes fracture and reform, producing environments that appear both recognisable and impossible.


The works embody what Scott describes as “the experimentation required to challenge conventional ways of working.” By refusing to physically alter the postcards, he foregrounds the subtle power of juxtaposition. Meaning is refracted rather than destroyed, and the resulting compositions invite viewers to reconsider how easily context can reshape perception.


In their apparent simplicity, the collages encourage a slower act of looking. The ordinary tourist image becomes unstable, shifting between documentation and invention. Through these modest arrangements, Deltiology reflects on how we record, remember, and inhabit the world — suggesting that even the most familiar views contain the potential for unexpected transformation.

Mænd – Monstered (2023–24)

Mænd – Monstered (2023–24) examines how contemporary media imagery shapes our perception of masculinity and intent. Drawing primarily from fashion magazines, Scott appropriates portraits of men that traditionally convey confidence, beauty, and status. Through minimal but deliberate interventions - small incisions, shifts, and reassemblies - these composed figures are subtly transformed into unsettling hybrid forms. The resulting “monsters” are not grotesque inventions but distortions that emerge from the very images designed to celebrate male identity.


The project began with Scott’s growing fascination with how visual culture frames masculinity. In a media landscape saturated with stylised representations, he became increasingly interested in how easily a figure could be reinterpreted through context and manipulation. A widely reported incident in the United States, in which a man was fatally shot after being presumed to have malicious intent, sharpened this enquiry. The event prompted Scott to reflect on how quickly suspicion can be constructed through appearance alone, and how media narratives contribute to an atmosphere in which individuals are judged before they are understood.


The process of collage is central to the work. Images are carefully sourced and juxtaposed so that each cut carries both aesthetic and conceptual weight. Rather than dramatically reconstructing the image, Scott employs restrained gestures that shift the viewer’s reading of the subject. A face may fragment, align with an architectural edge, or merge with surrounding forms. As observed in Collé Magazine Issue 40, these compositions “merge human forms with abstract shapes, creating a striking visual language that challenges the everyday, reflecting a conceptual exploration of destruction and creation.”


The series was later exhibited in Wrestling (2025), where its exploration of perception and misinterpretation became more explicit. In these works, Scott demonstrates how small distortions can radically alter our understanding of a subject, echoing the subtle manipulations through which media narratives are often constructed. The collages occupy a delicate space between portraiture and abstraction, where recognition remains intact but certainty dissolves.


Mænd – Monstered ultimately asks the viewer to confront the instability of visual judgement. By transforming familiar images through the simplest of interventions, Scott reveals how easily representation can slip into misrepresentation, and how quickly the monstrous can emerge from the ordinary when perception is guided by assumption rather than attention.

	Solo (2022)

Solo (2022) explores the conceptual limits of collage through a deliberately restrictive rule: each work is constructed from a single found image. Sourced from issues of National Geographic published between the 1960s and 1970s, the series asks a deceptively simple question: Can a collage still exist when only one image is used?


For Scott, the project became what he described as “an interesting creative conundrum, one in which a singular image changes meaning.” Rather than assembling multiple fragments, the works rely on the careful reconfiguration of one photograph. Through precise cuts, folds, and shifts, elements of the original image are repositioned so that new relationships emerge within the same visual field.


The process draws upon a range of cutting techniques, from the spontaneity of the rip to the controlled incision of the blade. These gestures allow Scott to interrupt the photograph’s original narrative, subtly redirecting the viewer’s attention. A horizon may fracture and realign, a figure may echo itself across the surface, or a landscape may fold inward to create an impossible space. The image remains singular, yet its meaning becomes multiple.


The series continues Scott’s earlier interest in “no waste” approaches to collage, while also reflecting the influence of the LESS methodology developed by the Danish-Ukrainian artist Sergei Sviatchenko, a friend and occasional collaborator whose work similarly explores minimal intervention and visual precision.


Through this restrained framework, Solo becomes an investigation into the power of the smallest gesture. By working with only one image, Scott demonstrates how subtle acts of cutting and repositioning can destabilise familiar imagery, revealing the unexpected possibilities that lie hidden within the photograph itself.

The Collage with Cars (2022) series by
Phil Scott explores our fascination with horsepower, tradition, and the legacy
of the automobile. Through playful combinations of rips, cuts, and precisely
sourced imagery, Scott reinterprets the once futurist ideals of speed and power,
concepts that celebrated mechanical progress and human ambition. These collages
reframe such narratives, reflecting on how our relationship with vehicles and
machinery has evolved over time.


The works
juxtapose the sleek precision of automotive design with the spontaneity of torn
and layered fragments, forming compositions that oscillate between control and
chaos. Scott’s process captures the analogue spirit of collage as a visual
record of changing cultural values where the car, once a symbol of freedom and
innovation, now invites reflection on nostalgia and transformation.


Play
(2022), from this series, was selected for Sleeping with Art: The Art of Car(d)s,
an international collective celebrating the intersection of art and automotive
design. Through this body of work, Scott continues to explore the tension
between aspiration and decay, craftsmanship and accident, inviting viewers to
reconsider the enduring allure of motion and the passage of time.

	Daily Rituals (2022)

Daily Rituals (2022) explores the shifting nature of the artist’s workspace and the rituals that shape creative production. Developed during a period in which Scott became increasingly preoccupied with the search for a studio of his own, the series reflects upon the blurred boundary between domestic life and artistic practice. Working primarily from the kitchen table - echoing the improvisational conditions described by Hannah Höch - Scott began to question whether creativity is defined by a physical location or by a state of mind.


Encounters with the writings and practice of Gabriel Orozco proved formative. Orozco’s rejection of the studio as a fixed or privileged site of production, instead proposing the world itself as a place of work, encouraged Scott to reconsider authorship, routine, and observation as creative tools. The resulting works examine how artists construct meaning through habit, attention, and circumstance rather than through controlled environments alone.


The title of the series draws directly from Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey, a study documenting the working methods and personal routines of writers, artists, and thinkers. Inspired by these accounts, Scott sought to visualise the multiplicity of creative approaches, imagining the studio as something continuously assembled through action rather than architecture.


Through collage and layered composition, workspaces appear fragmented and reconfigured. Tables, tools, and domestic objects drift between order and improvisation, suggesting environments shaped as much by interruption as intention. Playfully, each work adopts a title derived from quotations within Currey’s text, accompanied by the initials of the referenced artist, subtle acknowledgements of the invisible lineage of influence that underpins creative practice.


In Daily Rituals, the studio becomes both physical and psychological terrain. The works reflect on how artists negotiate time, distraction, and discipline, proposing that creativity often emerges not from ideal conditions, but from the negotiation of everyday life itself.

Passing Aircraft (2021)
During the coronavirus pandemic of 2020-21, Scott became interested in the
vacant skies above much as the globe as the majority of international travel came to a halt. The empty skies phenomenon reminded us of how common
place air travel has become, and how the phallic symbol of the aircraft
dominates our sky.&#38;nbsp; 
During this time
Scott&#38;nbsp; moved to Denmark and began life living under the flight path to
Billund International airport.&#38;nbsp; As the pandemic restrictions lifted and the planes overhead slowly grew in numbers, so did this series.&#38;nbsp; Scott’s practice is a reflection on the impact that the aircraft has and still is having on our environment
and lives.&#38;nbsp; 
The juxtaposition of the
airplane imagery makes the machine impossible, reflecting the travel
restrictions both real and theoretical. 
The collages have been referred to as a 21st century Yin and
Yang, and this circular repetition is an interesting way of understanding the
meanings that can be associated in the series. 
Whether the events of the pandemic make us pause and
reflect enough to feel the need for change is a question that only we as a global society
can answer. &#38;nbsp;

	The Fight (2021)


The Fight (2021) series by Phil Scott
examines the concept and duration of conflict through imagery sourced from
vintage boxing comic books. Comprising of three works, each piece documents a
single bout as a visual timeline, where sequence and framing coalesce to form a
narrative arc. Scott reorders and reframes these found illustrations, allowing
the rhythm of the fight to unfold across the white space of the page.


The series
draws upon the art-historical lineage of recording movement, from the
sequential studies of Eadweard Muybridge to the distorted, muscular figures
found in Francis Bacon’s paintings. Through this dialogue between historical
reference and popular illustration, Scott transforms static printed matter into
dynamic compositions that convey cadence, tension, and release.


By
isolating and recontextualising fragments of the original publications, the
artist imbues the work with a sense of physicality and momentum. The result is
a kinetic visual record of struggle and endurance, an exploration of the fight
as both spectacle and metaphor.

Wish You were Here? (2021)
The collages created for the Wish you
were here? (2021) series by Phil Scott explore our concept of memory and
attachment to a place.&#38;nbsp; 
The
juxtaposition and connections in the work relate through line, colour and
content to form new surrealist environments that recall the longing and
connection we craved during the global pandemic.&#38;nbsp; Scott incorporates  carefully-sourced
imagery from travel brochures, which advertise destinations that we were
unable to reach.&#38;nbsp; 
The work questions
where we would like to be, without fully associating the memory of places with
a specific location. Inspired
by the surrealist works of Max Ernst, Scott invites us to explore preternatural landscapes that lend themselves to chance finds and careful
consideration. The compositions present
unrestrained boundaries and borders that encourage our minds to wander and find our own narratives. 
The series plays with the concept of memory. It combines places using both forced and organic connections, creating a landscape we feel we recognise, but at the same time we recognise as fantastical.&#38;nbsp; 
The methodology
of the creative practice employs accuracy and a haphazard combination of collaged
photography from redundant travel brochures stacked up during lockdown. The work transforms the unobtainable to offer
glimpses of hope, like the possibility of visiting a far away island, as in Ø (2021) or the comforting woodland of Skov (2021).&#38;nbsp;

Western Women (2021)
The 'Western Women' series uses the iconographic imagery of the American wild west movies of the mid 20th century. Through the juxtaposition of the female and male roles in these classic movies, the work explores approaches that have established the foundation of our contemporary societies.&#38;nbsp; 
Reflecting on these female roles that are constructed within masculine imagery, we experience a contrast between empathy and aggression in the careful partnering of the images.&#38;nbsp; These works ask us to re-examine the role of the “western woman”, seeing her&#38;nbsp; as mediator and rational thinker in contrast to the overtly masculine agressive approach of her counterpart.&#38;nbsp; 
This work seeks to challenge the origins of these gendered
roles and the outdated constructs they rest on, which were forced on generations of young men and women. &#38;nbsp;
This series, and its accompanying counterpart,the Manhood (2021) series, were made during the pandemic of 2020-21.
